
A tense and chaotic scene unfolded Wednesday evening in Gretna, Virginia, when three deputies with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office were shot while serving warrants at a home on Blue Jay Lane in Pittsville.
Authorities identified the suspected gunman as James Lehnard, who was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff. Initial reports from the scene suggested he had surrendered, though scanner traffic later confirmed his arrest.
The shooting happened in the Pittsville/Gretna area, about 30 miles north of Danville. All three deputies sustained injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening. They were quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and later the loud hum of drones circling overhead as law enforcement agencies swarmed the area. Witnesses described a heavy police presence, including tactical units and support from surrounding jurisdictions.
“Prayers for PCSO and all other agencies involved… I pray no one else is harmed besides the person who opened fire on my blue family,” one local resident posted on social media.
The incident has rattled the close-knit community, with many residents expressing relief that no fatalities were reported and gratitude for the bravery of the responding officers.
The Virginia State Police and other agencies are assisting in the investigation. Officials have not yet disclosed the nature of the warrants being served at the time of the shooting.
